Assumption is often said to be: the lowest level of knowledge superior only to guessing.
But, is that really so? Knowledge is thought to be an empirical appreciation of a fact.
In the light of changing fundamental laws of physics after eons of years, is it really valid to translate a hypothesis into a theory anymore.
The world was thought to be flat at some point and this belief prevailed until it was debunked.
But how far can man go without assuming?
Consider these scenarios.
A child wakes up one morning and refuses to step out of bed because he refuses to assume the floor will not sink beneath his feet.
Or, he refuses to cross any bridge because there’s no guarantee that the bridge wouldn’t cave in half way into the journey.
How often do we assume a bridge is safe even in an unfamiliar terrain?
Would you plunge into a darkness that didn’t set in your presence? Why do you assume the world is safe?
We drive through the streets with little precautionary measure believing the other drivers are in proper frame of minds not to deliberately harm us.
We flag at the next available taxi assuming the driver will deliver us at our desired destinations.
When we are threatened we assume the police are out there to help us, and we run to them.
What if the world order suddenly changed overnight? What kind of nightmare are you gonna be?
How far can a man go without taking for granted some fundamental assumptions?
